Easily grow your email & SMS lists by running Instagram Giveaways and other campaigns. Typical setup time: 15 minutes.
Before setup, review this case study to see an example flow:
Step 1: Connect Gatsby with Klaviyo or other tools
Step 2: Make sure you're on the Core Plus plan
If you're not sure, follow these steps.
Step 3: Turn on Acknowledgement DM
Enable the Acknowledgement DM to automatically send Instagram Users a DM acknowledging that they've joined your email or SMS list.
Menu top right >> Settings >> Integration >> Toggle the switch
If the "Acknowledgement DM" is toggled on, then Instagram users will receive the following DM after subscribing to your list:
You're entered to win! You can expect a confirmation email or text from us shortly. If you're already subscribed with us, you may not receive the message again but will still be entered to win.
Note: You will soon have the option to customize this acknowledgment DM
Important: As of right now, you won't be able to save this setting without entering something in the Klaviyo SMS List ID field.
Until we get that fixed, either enter your Klaviyo SMS Subscribers List ID here or simply copy/paste the same List ID you have in the top field.
If you're not using Klaviyo, simply put anything in these fields in order to save the settings for now.
Step 4: Brainstorm an Instagram Giveaway
Design a simple strategy for Instagram users to know that they should DM you their email or phone number. For example, promote an Instagram giveaway as shown in this case study.
Questions to ask yourself:
- What is the giveaway prize and deadline to enter?
- What keyword(s) should be used for entry?
- Should ambassadors or influencers also be given their own keywords to promote your giveaway with their followers? (Tip: Gatsby can track which subscribers are driven by each keyword, allowing you to reward ambassadors for driving subscribers)
- Are you collecting email addresses, phone numbers, or both? (Please note: SMS is only supported in the US and Canada for a limited time)

Step 4: Create Your DM Auto-Replies in Gatsby
Auto-Reply #1: Triggered by your Keyword
1. In Gatsby, navigate to the left side pane >> Chat >> Auto-Replies >> New Auto-Reply
2. For the first question, choose "DMs"
3. Leave the advanced auto-reply toggled "off"
Example text for this auto-reply:
"Yay! To finish your entry, reply with your email or phone number and join our list!"
Don't forget to click "Enabled" and "Save" 👍
Auto-Reply #2: Triggered by receiving an email address OR phone number
1. In Gatsby, navigate to the left side pane >> Chat >> Auto-Replies >> New Auto-Reply
2. For the first question, choose "DMs"
3. For the second question, toggle the switch on for "Advanced Auto-Reply"
4. In the middle of the page, toggle the switch on for "Require Phone" or "Require Email"
Don't forget to click "Enabled" and "Save" 👍
Notes:
1. To include SMS Disclosure in the Body, see Klaviyo's suggested copy here.
2. To collect both email & SMS, repeat these steps and choose the other option the second time.

Notice the keyword syncs to Klaviyo so you can segment subscribers by which giveaway they entered and more!
Not in the US or Canada?
SMS is currently only available for US and CA numbers, however you can still use the Advanced Auto-Replies for Email subscribers or to direct your customers to your website or a product page. For the latter, choose the "Link" option instead of "Gatsby Action"

Field Definitions:
- Name: This is just an internal name for this auto-reply
- IG Account: Select your Instagram Account that will receive and respond to this trigger
- Auto-Reply Trigger: Leave blank if you want everyone who sends you their phone number to be prompted to join your SMS list
- Keywords in Advanced Auto-Reply: Leave blank if you want just a phone number or email address alone to trigger the message. If you want to require a keyword + a phone number or email address in the same message, include that keyword in the advanced auto-reply.
Tip: In most cases, you'll leave Keywords blank for advanced auto-replies
- Auto-Reply Content: You can see the preview of your Auto-Reply as you fill in these fields
- Gatsby Action: Choose Subscribe to SMS List or Email List
- Enabled: Toggle this on when you're ready for this Auto-Reply to trigger
- Allow Duplicate Replies: In most cases, you'll want to leave this off. If it's on, it means a person will trigger this auto-reply every time they send you their phone number.
