Between public, private and creator IG accounts, and different content (posts, Stories, Reels, mentions via tag or in a caption, etc), there are a lot of different scenarios to consider.
Based on how the Instagram APIs work, there are some limitations and requirements to be aware of when you're looking at which Instagram content is being tracked. Will this content / event be tracked? See scenarios table below:
IG User Type | Post/Reel | Story | Follows You | DM |
Public Account |
Yes @mentions in captions are immediately pulled into Gatsby, tagging on the media may take up to 20 minutes. |
Yes While story content expires, a record of who published the Story is logged indefinitely. |

TikTok User |
Yes, if the TikTok account is public, the user is already in your Gatsby account, and they publish a video with a hashtag you're tracking. |
*Caveat: Posts and Stories published from private Instagram accounts will track if you and the customer both follow each other and it's a "tag" in the creative or a "tag" in a story. However: Tags in Reels and @mentions in captions from private accounts will not track.
In general, we recommend relaying to your customers and ambassadors that they need to have a public Instagram account to be eligible for recognition and rewards.
